EU’s move to prolong anti-Russian sanctions in effect from Sat
BRUSSELS, Dec 22 (PRIME) -- The E.U. Council has published a decision to prolong its economic sanctions against Russia until July 31, 2018; the prolongation will come into force from Saturday, according to a statement published in the Official Journal of the E.U. on Friday.
The E.U. Council made the decision to prolong the sanctions on Thursday. “This decision shall apply until July 31, 2018,” the statement read.
“This decision shall enter into force on the day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.”
In 2014, relations between Russia and the West deteriorated to their worse since the Cold War due to a military conflict in Ukraine. The West introduced sanctions against some Russian individuals and firms and further against the energy and banking sectors. In response, Russia prohibited food imports from some countries, including the U.S., the E.U., Canada, Australia, and Norway.
